Why visit Fraser Island?
Because at a cool 1840km2 (that’s roughly 184,000 European football fields) the World Heritage-listed Fraser Island is the world’s largest sand island boasting some of the oldest dunes on earth and purest remaining dingoes, and is the only sand island in the world where you’ll find lush rainforests growing. Yes, that’s right; ancient, mighty trees sprouting from sand.
The island, also known as K’gari (meaning “paradise”) in the native Butchulla people’s language, is an incredible natural wonderland that really does offer something for everyone. Wander through its unusually abundant and diverse plant life (thanks to a naturally present mycorrhizal fungi in the sand), and look out for any of the 350 bird species or the 20-50 mammal species (such as wallabies, brushtail possums and echidnas) that call the island home. Swim in one of the 100+ freshwater lakes, such as the jaw-dropping Lake McKenzie, a “perched lake” (meaning it is fed only by rainwater) with unfathomably soft white silica sand and crystal clear water framed by green forest. Marvel at the Cathedrals’ sculpted and colorful sand cliffs.
Located around 250 kms north of Brisbane, Fraser Island can be reached by ferry from River Heads or Inskip Point, or on any one of the tours departing from Hervey Bay, Rainbow Beach, the Sunshine Coast/Noosa, Brisbane, or the Gold Coast. While there are plenty of day trips for those short on time, we highly recommend taking two or more days to get the most out of the island and enjoy accommodation ranging from camping and hostels, to bungalows and hotels. In whale watching season (June - November), you may want to combine a Fraser tour with one of the WhaleFree tours for a discounted package.
Here is just a taste of the tours on offer:
- Go natural and camp for a few days with a knowledgeable guide who will show you the best of the island.
- From Hervey Bay, take a day trip on the 1-day Fraser Explorer tour where you’ll relax in Lake McKenzie, swim along Eli Creek and see the Maheno shipwreck as you cruise down 75-mile beach.
- From Brisbane, you can enjoy a 2-day Sunset Safari Eco tour, where you’ll walk through national parks, swim in Lake Birrabeen, gaze at the views from Indian Head, see the vibrant Pinnacle Coloured Sands, and more.
- Or go crazy and do the 5-day Fraser Island and Great Barrier Reef tour, which includes the highlights of Fraser Island as well as the beautiful Lady Musgrave Island, and a range of activities such as swimming, surfing, kayaking and fishing.
No matter how much time you have, or what activities you’re interested in, we know you will love every minute you spend on this unforgettable island. So go ahead, look through our library of future magical moments for yourself and then let us help you create the perfect Fraser Island adventure!
