54321 My family of 3 booked this 1 day trip of Fraser- not really knowing much about the company. We only had 1 day .... and what a fantastic day it was. Luckily we got a top guide/ bus driver - Dave. He got 10/10 from all of us. So passionate about all aspects of information about Fraser ( should be Gurri) Island......Dave showed his true depth of leadership and cool calm manner when the bus got bogged- heavily in sand- a tide coming in - the pressure was on... but he got us out!!!! We loved it.! Highly recommend this trip. If you have the spare $80- take the flight- from the beach- it was sensational....

54321 The Fraser Island bus tour was a blast! We had so much fun discovering and exploring all day long! The sea plane was our personal favourite but Mackenzie Lake, Eli Creek, and the Maheno shipwreck were all amazing sites to see. We couldn't believe all the marine life we saw like Humpback Whales, Freashwater Turtles and even dolphins! It was a great day and so much fun for all ages.

54321 Would highly reccomend this tour. Jarrad our guide was so interesting & knowledgable. We saw whales, a dingo and also had to remove a python snake from the road. Great day. Thank you Jarrad

54321 Amazing tour of Fraser Island - something new to see around every bend, pristine creeks, miles of glorious beach to drive on, a Ship wreck & rain forest & a very interesting commentary by our guide & driver Murray.
Judy woodhams — 24 June, 2017

43211 The tour was great and fraiser island is a "must have" to see. Staff were very friendly and in a good mood. The only complain, which are a minor one was the speaker in the off-road bus, you couldn't understand everything well, sometimes it cracked in the speaker. I could only recommend to everyone do the tour. Whale watching was inclusive

54321 Craig was a great driver and tour guide, I honestly don't know how he remembers all the information! All the stops were great, and had plenty of time at each stop, the buffet lunch was great too. A great day out, well worth it if you can't do an overnight trip!
Georgia Sherreard — 15 June, 2017

32121 was an interesting trip...but the swimming and walking in the creek was at the cost of the rainforest info...we did not see one animal....no dingo at all, which was the plan of the trip

54321 My daughter and I had a terrific day together and loved how we were welcomed on board the ferry despite running late. I loved the history lessons spoken by Wayne on the bus and the breathtaking scenery we experienced at every stop. We particularly loved Lake McKenzie and Eli creek which we floated down on inflated rings. Lunch was good and capachinno at the cafeteria next door to Eurong resort was great too. Will come again ????

54321 We had the most wonderful day. The bus ride was better than any rollercoaster!! The driver Sean was the best educator of Fraser Island that we could have had and made the whole day such a good experience. Lunch was great. Lots of choice especially for me being Gluten Free. So enjoyed the plane trip and to see Lake MacKenzie from both the air and in it was extra special.

54321 Just returned this evening from a great one day tour of Frazer Island with Frazer Explorer. The organisation was spot on from the moment we were picked up from our accommodation at 7.30 this morning to our do off this evening at 6.30. Our bus driver on the island for the day was Peter whose commentary throughout the trip was informative and amusing and his knowledge of the flora and fauna of the island was exceptional. He made the whole experience very special. The bus journey over the sandy tracks was a real roller coaster ride and I would recommend a front seat for those who don't travel well. The lunchtime buffet offered something for everyone and was a very relaxed affair. Speeding down 75 mile beach was a novel experience and the sighting of dingo was a treat. Think that one must be trained to appear on cue :-) Thanks for a memorable trip to the staff of Frazer Explorer. Not cheap but what a great day.

54321 We had a Fabulous day with your tour Steve our driver was brilliant and extremely informative We loved everything about the tour Being able to take a scenic flight over the Island was absolutely amazing Swimming in lake Mckenzie was beautifully refreshing Highly recommended Couldn't ask for a better day Thank you ???????? 26/2/17
David & Anne-Marie Allen — 27 February, 2017

43211 The tour was great - the sights are really worth seeing and swimming in Lake McKenzie was incredible. Unfortunately for us we were loaded onto a bus with broken air-conditioning, left there to sweat for 15 minutes, before being moved onto a bus with working air-conditioning. This put us behind for the day. Our tour guide/driver, Sean, spent half the day telling us how many people had died from various snake/dingo/spider/drop bear bites. It was a bit of a downer for the start of the trip. As an Australian I completely understand the importance of safety, but it did really worry by English boyfriend and I thought it was over the top. Other than that, it was a great tour and we mostly enjoyed it.
Jess — 23 February, 2017

54321 Excelent day out the high lights of the day would be lake mc kenzie and the flight that we took a an extra. Just amazing to see fraser island from the air
Malcolm Terry — 11 February, 2017

54321 Excellent day. Dave was a mine of information, easy to follow and fun to be with - in spite of his dreadful jokes ;) I would recommend this tour to anyone.
Richard Ponsonby — 1 February, 2017

54321 My 20yr old daughter and 15 yr old son enjoyed the day, with Murray as their driver very much. The only drawback they told me were the short times spent at Lake McKenzie and Eli Creek.
Fiona Schwegler — 31 January, 2017

54321 Superb day out with Steve, a great driver, guide and historian. What an island! Well worth a visit and would recommend taking up the offer of the 15 min flight for $80 to really top off the experience!
Lorraine — 28 January, 2017

54321 Awesome day made even better by our tour guide Dave. Funny informative and extremely knowledgable. Highly recommended
Gavin — 18 January, 2017

54321 Spent the day with Murray as our driver/guide. His driving was brilliant and his level of knowledge about Fraser islands history, flora and fauna was just amazing. Learnt so much and had a wonderful time. Couldn't recommend these guys highly enough.

43211 We had a great day exploring Fraser Island on the one day experience. The creeks and lake Mackenzie were beautiful. The opportunity to jump in a plane on the beach was incredible and at only $80 was money well spent. It is a long day with most of the day spent on the bus but Kev our driver made the tour interesting and humorous and his driving skills were awesome! The food at Eurong resort for lunch was average.
Jacqui — 28 December, 2016

32121 All in all a good day. Some things were a bit rushed (like the tea break where we barely had time to get our tea and had no chance to look in the gift store) and other things we hung around longer than necessary (like the coloured rocks). The most disappointing thing was that we got told at checkin that we had been moved to another bus and then another and by the time we got back to our original bus which we should have been on all along, all the seats were taken and the 4 of us had to sit in individual seats far from one another. This ruined what would have been a really special family trip. When I asked if anything could be done, I was told there were no other spaces and our only option was to ask people on the bus to move. There should be a better boarding system so that there aren't random seats left open and group don't have to split up. It really affects your experience when you can't share it with your loved ones.
Lisa — 27 December, 2016

54321 We really enjoyed our day tour on Fraser Island. Our tour guide made it very interesting and we learnt so much. We took plenty of water and a snack, so thanks for the tip Sharon. The lunch was good too. A fantastic day overall.
Joyce & Leigh — 13 November, 2016

54321 What a fantastic tour with Kev. We were entertained with his in depth knowledge of the island, his jokes and patience. The buffet lunch was delicious and all the places we stopped at were great. It would have been nice to stay longer at some but I guess with bigger groups it's a bit hard. My son and I had a blast. We even did the spontaneous seaplane trip over Fraser at an extra cost but it was so worth it.. Highly recommend these guys for a day out on Fraser Island!
Allison & Ethan — 12 November, 2016

43211 Got off barge onto bus than off we go for a quite drive through the island how wrong was l.Sat up back of bus thought l was on a trampoline lucky l had seat belt on .Once we made the beach ride was quite good.Had a good day meal was very poor.Back on main land on our way home bus broke down had to wait over an hour for replacement.Darryl & Sue

54321 What a beautiful Island. Dave, our bus driver/tour guide was great. Very friendly & informative. Drive was very bumpy so not recommended if you have a sore back. Buffet lunch at Eurong Resort was very nice & plentiful. A highly recommend tour. 2 days would be better as it was slightly rushed. Bring water, light snack, sunscreen, hat, mosquito repellent & enjoy a beautiful day out that you'll remember for the rest of your life!
Georgina — 9 November, 2016

54321 We had a really good day, our instructor Dave was a funny guy and a good guide ! We saw the most important attractions on Fraser Island, had 1 hour to take a bath in LakeMcKenzie and also the 45 Minutes of Lunch were plenty. We really enjoyed the trip, good organised and totally worth it. But we recommend to sit in front of the bus otherwise you might get sick.
Ulrike & Karoline — 8 November, 2016

54321 We went with our family (2 adult, 2 children) on this tour and loved every minute of it. The tour guide had a lot of knowledge and a lot to tell.
Reinier — 8 August, 2016

54321 Had a fabulous day. Jarrud our tour guide and driver was excellent. His knowledge was very informative on everything the Island has to offer.
Lorraine and Barry — 29 July, 2015

54321 Well organised from start to finish. Our tour guide Barry was fantastic, friendly, informative and great driving skills! All the stops were fabulous. Make sure you have your togs already on or change at the toilets at Lake Mckenzie as the stop isn't that long. Really pleased we had a carseat for our 6year old. He was nice and secure for the bumpy tracks and loved it! We thought the buffet lunch was great and were pleased we had packed snacks for the rest of the journey. The day went really fast and can't wait to get back to Fraser sometime in the future. Mel
Melissa Gane — 5 April, 2015

54321 It was absolutely Amazing. Lake Mckenzie was crystal clear water and same with Eli creek , we loved swimming in both . Out your guide was so knowledgeable and knew a lot about the island itself . I would recommend this to anyone :) didn't see any dingos though !
Sharvana & Daniel — 10 February, 2015

43211 Tour driver was great. Tour guide had good knowledge. The sites visited were great. Lunch was a bit average - nothing to rave about. We had a good day.
Veronica — 9 January, 2015

43211 Great day. Our guide Butch was a fountain of knowledge and drove our bus expertly. Was pretty hungry by lunch though. Agree with a previous review on that we could've been provided with morning tea. All in all a fantastic experience.
Dave — 26 November, 2014

54321 Thanks to our Driver Woody. His knowledge of the island and his driving abilitiy was brilliant. Even though the weather wasn’t the best, the tour was fantastic and worth every cent. Thanks again!

54321 THANKS to the driver who gave us a very special day
Sharon Graham — 15 October, 2014

54321 Just thought I should thank you for the tour! We had an awesome time and will be coming back for more! Thanks again :D
Chris Scott — 15 October, 2014

32121 It was a great day,but expected at least a cup of tea/morning tea to be included. A pick up at 7am then nothing, not even a drink or a shop was offered until lunch at 1.30pm. (That's 7 hours since we ate) If we knew there wasn't M'tea we would've packed extra.) Then the lunch was even rushed, (40 mins, and didn't have time to look around). But loved the bus!
Sharon Cherry — 24 September, 2014

54321 When our visitors from Brisbane and NZ wanted to see Fraser Island we choose the one day tour - best way to see the island. Steve kept reminding passengers about safety particularly the surf, sharks and dingoes - there is one young French girl who is still confused about "drop bears". Had a great day and would recommend to locals and visitors
Beth and Brian — 29 May, 2014

54321 We had such a great day. Our tour guide Sean was awesome. The lunch provided was very nice. Cant complain at all. Highly recommend this tour. 10/10.

54321 Had an absolutely amazing day touring Fraser Island with our guide Graham! The island is such a fascinating place and Graham was able to fill the group in on its history throughout the day. I highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting the area!
Amanda — 1 February, 2014

54321 The four of us went on the one day Fraser tour today with our tour guide Cameron. My husband and I took my brother and sister-in-law and they had a magic day. Just wanted to let you know that we enjoyed our trip tremendously. Cameron was a great guide with his entertaining stories as well as a good driver. He was good with the people on our tour and we enjoyed his idea of punishment for latecomers. (No one came late!) This one day tour gave us good value for money with the morning tea with muffins, and the excellent buffet lunch. We had not expected this for the price and were pleasantly surprised.

54321 The rodeo seat in the back of bus was a hoot!!!! We loved the whole experience of th island. Thnkyou Paul for a fun filled day. Wouldn't want to travel with anyone else Yea Ha!!!!

54321 Had a fantastic time on this Fraser Island tour – favourite was Lake McKenzie. I wish I could have stayed there forever. Our great guide made the day the best it could be. And it wasn’t as busy as I thought it would be!

54321 Thank you to Mark for the awesome tour. He was so funny and made sure we all had a fabulous day. Very knowledgeable and a good amount of time at each destination. Lots of fun and recommend it to everyone – you don’t know what you’re missing until you visit. Worth every single dollar.
Robyn — 20 July, 2012

54321 Hi Matt! Just to let you know that although it rained on our 1 Day Explorer tour of Fraser Island we had Anne as our tour guide and my family wish to let you know that she was more than helpful and fun and made what was a bleak day into a fun day and her energy in the light of rain and unhappy bus load of visitors to Fraser, she made everyone feel better somehow and her knowledge of the fauna and flora made it a great day out regardless of the weather! My wife and son rode shotgun (up front with her) and she was a delight for bother and we just wish for you to say a big hello from the Gunnyon family from Melbourne for her positive outlook and her smile that got us all through it. Please thank her once again and give our best !!!

Our Tour Review

The Good

The Fraser Explorer tour from Hervey Bay is the most popular 4x4 tour from Hervey Bay probably because it is the best value and gets great reviews (and if you love a buffet lunch, it’s included free and you can go back as many times as you’d like!).

This tour sees most of the Fraser sites in a single day and isn’t too rushed, but there is still a lot to see!

This tour is also well suited to everybody, from infants (BYO carseat) to the more mature. The tour includes an optional short walk in the rainforest, but not compulsory. If you can climb 5 steps (to get in and out of the coach) and are OK in soft sand, you are all good to go for this great tour.

Availability is pretty good for this tour even last minute, but book early for Australian School holidays. This tour can be quite flexible with changing your dates to suit your itinerary or weather with 48 hours notice, so no need to hesitate - book early to be sure.

Things to Consider

Some people prefer smaller groups, but really, the larger 4x4 coaches are at times more capable than smaller passenger vehicles due to their longer wheel base.

The tour also doesn’t visit the Champagne Pools or Indian Head as these places are very remote and require an additional 2 hours of driving to reach (not enough time in the day!). If you are keen to see these places, we recommend you consider a 2 day tour from Hervey Bay.

Also exactly the same tour departs from Rainbow Beach and is $9 cheaper, so if you’re traveling the coast, consider this!

Our Recommendation

If you’ve only got 1 day to spare, and value is key, this is the tour for you.

Representing the cheapest one day tour from Hervey Bay, and popular for the included buffet lunch, its hard to go past this tour.

If you’re a bit more of a luxury traveler, for a couple more $ the Fraser Explorer Premium Tour is pretty much the same tour, just a smaller tour (max 18 guests), and a restaurant style meal – order from a menu. Also premium tour does not offer family rates, so tends to attract less children.
